A stopover at
Dolly’s Tea Shop in Calcutta is a must
Long before the advent of tea lounges in India,
a small tea outlet in a busy south Calcutta shopping complex
blazed a new trail. It was perhaps the first shop where connoisseurs
of tea - and there are plenty in Eastern India - could sample,
sip and buy their favourite single origins and blends.
Dolly’s – The Tea Shop is the original tea retail
point with a difference. Started back in 1989 by Dolly Roy,
a tea taster and entrepreneur, this shop offers the finest
teas from Darjeeling, Assam, Orissa, South India, the Nilgiris
and Kangra Valley. Sourced directly from the gardens, the
teas are stored in wooden chests and spooned out, blended,
weighed and packed as per customer requirements.
“We have a wide variety of tea to suit every pocket,”
says Dolly Roy. Besides, for those who want the tea service,
there’s whole range of palate teasers. There’s
Tea Fruit Cup, Tea Punch (laced with ginger ale and lemonade),
Grapefruit Cooler, Pineapple Pitcher, Tea Slush, Mango Tea,
Lemon Barley Tea, Tea Float (tea with a dollop of ice-cream
and honey), Tea Shake, Tutti Frutti Tea (tea with fruit, ice-cream
and jam), Ginger Tea, Tea Cocoa, Masala Chai, Cardamom Tea.
There are special teas for every season. Refreshing iced tea
for summer. Steaming hot cuppa for cold winter evenings. Spiced
Lemon Tea for rainy days. Green Tea and Lemon Tea for the
health conscious. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian sandwiches
are made to order.
The décor is simple – the façade is that
of a thatched hut; inside bright lanterns and candles add
to the relaxed and friendly ambience. Most of all, it’s
the rendezvous for tea lovers: every item in the shop speaks
the language of tea – passionately.
Dolly’s Tea Shop is also known for innovative packaging.
Teas for gifting get a special touch with jute, cane, bamboo
and ceramic packaging. Bulk orders are also handled.
