Sir Robert Stanes founded The United Nilgiri Tea Estates Co.
Ltd. (UNTE) in 1922. In 1960, Shri S Anantharamakrishnan,
father of the present Chairman Mr Sivasailam, bought the company
from the Stanes family. UNTE, along with other Stanes companies,
thus became a part of The Amalgamations Group, a pioneer business
conglomerate in South India.
The 82-year old plantations of UNTE are situated in the Nilgiri
'Blue Mountains', at elevations ranging from 1800-2400 metres
above sea level. In this pristine setting, the company takes
great pride in environment conservation.
UNTE's Chamraj Factory is one of the first in the plantation
sector to be certified under ISO 9002. All processes of tea
making, from cultivation to packing, follow the highest standards.
Today, some of the finest teas - Orthodox, CTC, Green Tea,
Decaffeinated, Flavoured, Herbal and Organic Teas are manufactured
at the company-owned facilities for export to several countries.
UNTE uses only neem-based natural pesticides and Korakundah
is one of the premier organic tea estates in India. The teas
are 100% pesticide free as per EU and German standards. Our
organic teas are certified by Institute of Marketecolgy, Switzerland,
and are also 'Kosher' certified.
Estate employees receive housing, recreation, and healthcare
of the highest standards. Children of the employees are offered
quality education, and the twin Children's Home provides a
shelter for orphans. A stipend is given to workers' children
pursuing college education.
UNTE has several labour welfare schemes, including a unique
pension plan, for its employees. Chamraj is the first South
Indian tea company to be registered with Fair Trade Labelling
